I know nothing about Veneta, or Europe '72, or what happened to their 16-track prototype tape deck. What I see (looking back) is the fact that Warner Bros, the Grateful Dead, Alembic (and perhaps Ampex) all "had dibs” on this unique and expensive tape deck. Actually, it was “two” Ampex tape decks combined into one prototype deck. Ron Wickersham was the engineer in charge of this stuff.

The fact is, this tape deck would have been very expensive to lug around, to keep maintained, and to operate and record any live shows successfully on tour. This point is clearly documented with the release of the Europe ‘72 recordings. The info that discusses how this was achieved, including what I wrote - speculating about some of the costs, lays the groundwork for showing that this was a very expensive tape-recording operation (performed by Alembic).

Rather than financing the 16-track field recording of more live shows in ‘73, it appears clearly to me that instead, GD and Alembic put all of their resources (including their soundmen) into building and perfecting the prototype Wall of Sound that year. (Thank You very much!!!) RFK Stadium in ‘73 was the best sound I ever heard come out of a PA System, period.

Lucky for me I was there in ‘73, and I taped a few of these shows. Add to this the fact that I toured a couple of years in the mid-’70s as a soundman with a couple of bluegrass bands, and then I worked for Ampex for a few years right after that. Beyond these facts, I know nothing!

That photograph was put out by Alembic in a July 1973 newsletter
